Factions > Pure Type Bio-monsters

Written by Geoffrey Duke, June 2003

The term pure type is applied to bio-engineered creatures designed and bred/grown in the Ancient Age to be nothing less than living weapons, or in other words bio-weapons (the word "bio" means living or organic). Also known as pure type bio-monsters, these living weapons were meant to be the guardians of the ecosystem, acting as the human predators previously absent from the world who prey on growing human populations in order to ensure that they never grow into a threat to themselves or to the environment. Like drones, pure type bio-monsters are nothing more than slaves, albeit unquestioning ones. They differ from their mutated counterparts due to the fact they have remained true to their genetic design since their creation. The ancients created drones to do physical, laborious work for them -- tasks they didn't want to perform themselves, which incidentally, is where the term drone is derived. The ancients' creations spared their creators the rigors of manual labor; in the case of pure type bio-monsters, the ancients had created the perfect weapons which didn't require them to fight for themselves. The ancients who built the Towers didn't need to build warships with laser cannons spilling out of each gunport when their creations could do their fighting for them. These biological weapons range from ground to airborne units (thanks to anti-gravity attributes in many cases), dragons ranking as the most powerful among them. It wouldn't be far fetched to describe some as giant insects, or insect-like.

Pure type bio-monsters -- bio-engineered predators still genetically pure and unchanged over time -- are often bio-mechanical in nature. They are usually armed to the teeth with lasers and other mechanical equipment/weaponry, and armoured in ageless metallic exoskeletons. Very little is known about the Ancient Age, yet we know that pure type bio-monsters continue to fulfill the wishes of long forgotten masters. Their point of origin most ostensibly being ancient Towers, and their sphere of influence being the surrounding ecosystems they are ordered to guard, no rhyme nor reason will deter them from that purpose. Only superior strength of arms will prevail over their merciless programming. We don't know to what extent their programming allows for autonomy, though they can indeed fight without guidance. It is when they are directed as an army that they are at their most fearsome. Sestren Exisis, the Tower overseer, controlled armies pure type bio-monsters through active Towers over great distances in this capacity. Now that the Sestren AI no longer exists, who knows if they even have a role to play in the future without its ability to organise and focus their wrath?

Panzer Dragoon:

Kyle comes face-to-face with his worst nightmare. Not long before Kyle stumbles on two dragons locked in the heat of battle, he encounters a huge pure type creature encassed in a metallic shell (the image of it here best depicts what my words would simply fail to describe in accurate detail). Now, why did this creature awaken when the Tower near the Imperial capital wasn't fully active yet? The only conclusions I can draw from this series of events is that the pure type creature sensed the presence of a human and sought to eradicate him, or was under control of the drone riding the Dark Dragon nearby, because according to the Seekers, drones can synchronize with active pure type bio-monsters giving them a limited degree of guidance. I believe the former is closer to the truth than the latter; however, it could've been guarding a partially active ruin that somehow ordered the creature to safeguard it from all intruders. The fact that this creature killed the borrower which Kyle had chased into the ruin does suggest that it would seek the death of anything intruding on its domain with equal determination. Perhaps such creatures can act independently to some degree when alone, or perhaps the presence of any non-pure type creature provokes a violent reaction.

In the midst of the burning Imperial capital silver pure type creatures rise up from the sea in an attempt to block the armoured blue dragon's path to the Tower. When the Tower outside the Imperial capital does finally go active, hundreds of pure type creatures begin attacking the capital itself with all the ferocity of ravenous predators. Amidst the carnage of the burning capital Kyle and Lagi race towards the source of the problem, fighting through an army of pure type creatures every step of the way. Silver pure type creatures similar to the one Kyle enountered at the beginning of the game, among others, are intent on stopping the two from reaching their final destination. I always thought they were lower resolution models of the same creature, even though they fire long bursts of well-aimed green laser beams at Lagi.

Panzer Dragoon Saga:

Lazaras are pure type creatures that rule the skies. A group of Lazaras attempt to swarm Lagi.

The wingless yet airborne fish-like Lazara are perfect examples of pure type creatures, as they hunt in packs and are synchronized with one another. While working together in this fashion, they can coordinate their attacks, which is exemplified by their ability to target enemies with powerful laser beams simultaneously. The library of defeated enemies in Panzer Dragoon Saga describes them as "bio-technical", as in an organic creature enhanced by technology. Lazaras at least seem bio-mechanical in nature, but their laser weapons and simultaneous laser targeting confirm their bio-mechanical nature without leaving any room for doubt. Lazara are sent out by the Towers in groups to patrol areas under the influence of the Towers and to sanitize those areas of anything the Towers see as a threat to the ecological balance they've created. Basically, they act as sentries by purging areas of intruders.

An Imperial soldier fires his machine gun frantically. To no avail of course.

When Azel activates the Tower of Uru, a pure type biomonster pounces down on the Imperial soldiers present and kills the 7th Emperor. Notice its blood red/infa red right eye/visual sensor. The rocky white shelled beast wields a claw that folds in and out of its front right leg. If I were to exaggerate I'd say the blade wasn't razor sharp, but worse, laser sharp. It stabs and slices the intruders with great efficiency, considering it's using a mere melee weapon. Needless the say the remaining troops are caught off guard, but they do try to defend themselves nonetheless. Unfortunately, the Empire is not equipped to fight such demons, since it is used to fighting non-armoured mutants. Machine gun bullets merely bounce off its impervious shell, not making a single dent. The Imperials here were unprepared, which begs the question: if the Empire couldn't stand against these beasts, then what chance does the rest of humanity have?

Even when Edge fires his laser weapon at the biomonster the result is the same. But does that stop Edge from trying anyway?

Even Edge's laser gun fails to penetrate its outer armour; laser bursts just skim off the surface. Only with repeated blasts was Edge able to subdue this ancient bio-weapon.

The above information was gleaned from Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon Saga and to a limited scope, Panzer Dragoon Orta. I may add a picture of the Golia seen in Panzer Dragoon Zwei along with some additional information about it at a later date.
