Characters > Edge

Written by Solo Wing Dragon, April 2003

Edge was the fourth dragon rider who befriended the Heresy Dragon, Lagi. Unlike previous dragon riders such as Kyle or Lundi who randomly came into contact with the dragon, Edge was chosen due to the fact that he was possessed by an otherworldly entity known as the Divine Visitor. However, despite this, Edge's part to play was significant. He shows passion for Lagi's course (and his own quest for vengeance), something that would not happen if he was just a pawn in the grand scheme of things.

Edge was first introduced to us in the epic conclusion of the trilogy, Panzer Dragoon Saga. The captain of the fourth Excavation Site of the Empire raised the fifteen-year-old orphan and because of this lifestyle, Edge became a mercenary. The ginger haired boy longed for a more exciting life than "guarding this dump", something that ultimately came to him when a drone called Azel was unearthed from the ancient ruins. At the moment of her discovery the Black Fleet, a group of rebels led by the Imperial traitor K. F. Craymen, attacked the site. Edge's captain and fellow workers were massacred by Craymen's psychotic henchman, Zastava, leaving Edge with a yearning for revenge. Drawn by a sense of duty to hunt down his Captain's killers but also a strong desire to learn more about the girl who was unearthed, Edge ran headstrong after Craymen's ship. However, an unexpected turn of events left him falling unconscious into the abyss below with a bullet through his chest.

'Stubborn punk!' 'The soul who dwells inside Edge'

It was soon after these events that the Divine Visitor's white orb entered Edge's body and led him to his encounter with the dragon. Like Lundi before him, Edge's quest was one of vengeance but soon became bound to the dragon's goal of reaching the Tower. However it should be noted that although Edge basically sacrificed his life for the good of mankind, his bravery did not go unrewarded. Edge formed a close bond with Lagi, perhaps more so than previous dragon riders. Kyle and Lundi were both parted from the dragon once their missions had come to an end, but this is unlikely to have happened to Edge should there have been a choice. The bond between this human and the dragon was so great that even after the Heresy Dragon had fulfilled it's purpose, Lagi returned to the mortal world to protect the child of this former rider, something he chose of his own free will. This clearly shows that no matter how important the Divine Visitor was, the human Edge did mean a lot to Lagi; this was his way of thanking him.

Craymen was a character who was the centre of Edge's focus throughout most of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Craymen's 'kidnapping' of the drone Azel and his invasion of the Excavation Site caused Edge to insistently hunt down the rebel leader, even putting his mission above of his own safety. However, as Edge was pulled deeper into the war between the Empire and the Black Fleet he begins to question who the real enemy is. After seeing the Empire's flagship Grig Orig destroy the Town of Zoah, Edge's meeting with Craymen in the Tower all but changed his mind. Craymen's goals become clear and Edge was forced to choose between helping those who are trying to save the world and those who are destroying it.

'I merely set the stage. You must fulfill your own destiny, in your own way.' 'Please, try to be on time.'

One of the first characters that Edge met up with after his friends were killed was Gash, a character who was later confirmed to be the leader of the Seekers. Edge became deeply involved in the Seeker's purpose and struggle against the ancient technology, which was perhaps out of character as he had been brought up with the Empire's belief that they were a group of uncivilised bandits. It was with socialising with these people that Edge learnt the truth - or at least part of the truth surrounding the Ancient Age. In the end Gash used Edge as a weapon against Sestren but it was Edge who chose to risk his existence by entering the astral passages to face the unseen terror that lurked within.

Edge's fate after his encounter with Sestren still remains a little murky, even after the release of Panzer Dragoon Orta. There are a number of theories as to what happened to Edge when the Divine Visitor entered his body, which closely relate to the conclusion of the story. The main ones are as follows:

1) When Edge was shot by Zastava he didn't die, but fell into unconsciousness. The Divine Visitor entered his body and healed him of the wound. The Divine Visitor left Edge's body at the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga and he survived.

2) As Edge fell from the bridge he died, but the Divine Visitor entered his body and brought him back to life. When the Divine Visitor left his body at the end of the game he continued his life as if nothing had happened.

3) He was close to death as he floated but the Divine Visitor entered Edge's body. The Divine Visitor kept him alive until the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga when the white orb left Edge's body and he was left floating lifeless in Sestren.

'Azel, what about you!?' 'So, you were guiding me... Then you must be the Divine...'

The last possibility is the most likely in my opinion, portraying the ill-fated nature of the Panzer Dragoon world. However, Edge's legacy did not end in Sestren, it had merely begun. In the English version of Panzer Dragoon Saga Edge was attracted to the drone Azel and she did in fact have feelings for him in return although it was tragically too late before she understood them. Azel used Edge's DNA to create their daughter, a human/drone hybrid called Orta. Azel's fate is never revealed but judging from the recording that she leaves Orta it is unlikely that her search for Edge had a happy ending; the fact that Abadd states that Orta was created from the human's gene data rather than his physical DNA reinforces this theory.
